Kruse’s development as a designer, strategist, and historian has everything to do with strip mall directory signs in his hometown of Los Angeles.

Made up of mostly amateur graphic elements and typography, these composites offer concise visual cues for the entwined histories of peoples who have converged on the city from every corner of the planet.

As a practitioner, he places emphasis on effectively researched, precisely constructed brand systems; as a theorist, he studies how cultural experience endows visual form with communal and often unsaid meaning.
